The last two years I’ve taken the month of September off to explore and fish Alaska. The start of my 2018 trip was hosting 5 female anglers on a United Women on the Fly Alaska Women’s Adventure. This was the second year that I teamed up with Kate and Justin Crump owners of Frigate Travel, a dynamic couple, who have been guiding Alaska for almost ten years.

This is a photo essay of the 2018 United Women on the Fly Alaska Women’s Adventure and what women can expect for years to come on this trip. We’re heading back to Alaska on September 5th – 10th, 2019. Email info@unitedwomenonthefly.com with any questions.
These trips are so much more than a fishing adventure. Women of different ages, professions, backgrounds and fishing abilities come together to experience a trip of a lifetime. It’s a scary thing to step out of their comfort zone and join 5 other women. The energy, laughter, smiles and friendships are like no other. We came as strangers and leave UNITED as fly sisters.
LOGISTICS are pretty simple. Connect in Anchorage Alaska and Fly to King Salmon together.
The FISHING opportunities are plentiful in September! We’re fishing for aggressive Rainbow Trout and Silver Salmon with either a single or double handed fly rod. Occasionally we get lucky catching a Grayling, Dolly and Char.

We use both Single and Double Handed FLY FISHING TECHNIQUES. This trip is mostly single handed fishing with an egg pattern and indicator or streamer fishing. Both the Nak Nek and Kvichak fish are aggressive and love swung flies.

This was the first year we stayed at the King Salmon Lodge. The rooms were clean, beds and linens were comfortable, the food was good and the drinks were delicious!! Definitely better than one would expect on a FISH BUM budget.
Plane, Truck or Boat got us to our fishing location. There’s opportunities to fly into locations to walk and wade, fish from a boat or motor/float in a boat from fishing hole to fishing hole. Frigate will either fly in packable rafts or have boats located at certain fly out locations. We schedule two fly outs during the week (not included in the quoted trip cost). We’ll either be flying in a Beaver or 206 plane with floats.

The Fishing options are endless and here are an example of a few. Nak Nek River (aggressive large rainbows that like to eat swung flies. Also Silver Salmon opportunities), Kvichak (world famous for VERY LARGE aggressive Rainbows), Kulik (bears, beautiful float on packable rafts and incredible fishing) or Brooks River (famous bear viewing falls, lots of bears and gorgeous leopard rainbows), Egegik River (volcano viewing, raft float with an opportunity for a Salmon Slam). That’s just to name a few.

Bring your cameras because there’s a photo opportunity around every corner. Most think of Alaska Grizzly Bears. You’ll definitely get your Grizzly fill. There are certain locations (Kulik River and Brooks River) where you’ll be fishing among the bears. Both rivers are located in the Katmai National Park, a scenic and amazing place. This Alaska Adventure is not complete without going through Grizzly School at Brooks River and standing at the Falls Observatory. Check out the LIVE BEAR CAM before you go.

Gyotaku is the Japanese art of making fish prints on delicate rice paper. This artform reproduces the exact features and characteristics of actual, individual fish.
United Women on the Fly is a social media partner with KeepEmWet Fishing. We do our best to properly handle fish that we catch. Frigate is also a huge advocate for proper fish handling. Check out AquaTech for their AxisGo Cell Phone Underwater Case. Several of the ladies caught and kept their Silver Salmon. Frigate Travel does a great job filleting and packaging salmon for you to take home.

Join us on this annual Fall Adventure!! Email info@unitedwomenonthefly.com with any questions.

Curious on the costs… look great!
I don’t have much experience fly fishing but I have enjoyed the beauty of Brooks, Naknek River and King Salmon Lodge! Do you take beginners?!
Sharon – We love beginners!!! The 2019 trip is full but we’ll be going again in 2020. Keep an eye out for the event. =)
