Photography Tip – Direct Your Subject

UWOTF Photography Tuesday Tips - Week #4-1

Direct Your Subject

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP Week #4

Jessica Haydahl is taking over the United Women on the Fly Tuesday Tips for the month of August.  10 years professionally shooting the sport of fishing, Jessica loves to capture life unfolding in front of her lens.  This week’s tip is “Direct Your Subject”.

If you are the one holding the camera, then the fish’s health and safety is in your hands.

Don’t be afraid to direct your subject and let your subject know exactly what you would like them to do. If you are the one holding the camera, then the fish’s health and safety is in your hands. If I am asking someone to lift a fish out of the water, then I take all the other Tuesday Tips into consideration before having my subject raise that fish out of the water.

UWOTF Photography Tuesday Tips - Week #4

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I prepared?
  • Is my camera set right?
  • Do I know the shot I want to take?
  • Are we in a safe spot to take these images and can we get out of the boat and get low with the fish?

Be very clear about the directions of handling the fish, what direction you would like them and the fish to be in and how you would like them to release that fish.

If so then don’t be afraid to direct your subject. Be very clear about the directions of handling the fish, what direction you would like them and the fish to be in and how you would like them to release that fish. The more you practice and figure out what type of imagery you would like to capture, then the more your imagines will dramatically improve!
