Clairey Grubbs

Candid, Compassionate and Creative.  You won’t ever meet another human quite like Clairey Grubbs. She wears her heart on her sleeve, she’s a go getter and would give anyone the shirt off her back. Clairey has helped play a vital role with the United Women on the Fly as the FIRST Regional Fly Sister and is our Social Media Liaison.

Where are You From?

I was raised in Spartanburg, SC and moved to Jackson, WY in 1995.  I moved away a couple of times but I always return to Jackson.  I lived in Key West, FL and also Steamboat Springs, CO. I now reside outside of Jackson in Alpine, WY but I’m not opposed to living back in Key West for all of winter!

What is your role with UWOTF?

I’m the Social Media Liaison who mostly helps with the United Women on the Fly Instagram.

I can Hula-Hoop like the good little quarter hippie that I am.

Are you involved in other Women fly fishing groups?

Founder of Lady Anglers of WyDaho.  We’re a fly fishing group for women in the Jackson, Star Valley, Victor ID and the surrounding small communities of WyDaho.

I’m on the board for Stripping for a Cure and am a Trout Unlimited member.  Stripping For A Cure is an annual women’s fly fishing event held on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Proceeds from the event are donated to the St. John’s Health Foundation, to assist patients and their families with the challenges of treatment and recovery.

How has UWOTF Impacted your life/fly fishing community?

By being a part of UWOTF I’ve learned so much. My Keep Fish Wet journey should definitely be spoken of. I’m far from perfect and I do still struggle with getting a good shot from the boat. My awareness has greatly changed though and many behind the scenes actions are taking place prior to photos these days with the fish being the hero.

Dry fly, nymph, euro, streamer, soft hackle, etc and why?

I fish whatever is working! Hahaha! I’m the last thing from a purist (no disrespect), it’s not my jam. I like catching so I’ll change things up until I find what method is working.

There is beauty in all of it in my eyes. Ok, maybe there isn’t so much magic in bobber fishing….but hey, the magic is picking the right fly! I do greatly enjoy fishing big foam bugs and watching that often violent eat. I also admire the delicate take of a small dry but I’m blind as a bat too sooooo.

Stripping streamers is super exciting when on but I often give up on streamer fishing quickly if it’s not producing. I get tired and impatient with it unless I’m doing it on the Salt. All in all, if it’s working, it’s my favorite.

Favorite fishy podcast?

I’ll cast to a pod of fish. Hehe. Honestly, I’m not much of a podcast girl. I’ll listen if someone recommends one or a friend is being featured. I’m really ADHD so it’s hard to focus on just voices chatting and no visual stimuli.

Favorite app?

I’d have to say one of my music apps. Music brings me joy! I probably use Facebook & Insta the most though.

your most useless skill is?

Isn’t that a bit of an oxymoron? All my skills are useful in someway. That’s why it’s a skill right? Hmmm, I’m perplexed by this question. I can Hula-Hoop like the good little quarter hippie that I am. I’m also annoyingly observant. I’ll tell a stranger if they have a booger. But I’m 5 feet tall so I basically look up everyone’s nose 🤷🏼‍♀️

My real-life superpower is?

Making others laugh and building amazing relationships, especially with kids.

My zombie apocalypse plan is?

I live in Wyoming. My family was built for this sh** . Pew! Pew! Zombies are going down!
