December we celebrate Corie Berrigan. We met Corie through social media. She is always sharing information, teaching and giving back to the angling (especially women) community. The midwest is lucky to have Corie!! Read her story below. Connect with Corie via Email – firstname.lastname@example.org on Facebook or on Instagram. Be sure to also check out the Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota.
Outdoor activities have always been part of my life, whether it was skiing, biking, hiking, camping or fishing. As a kid I loved spending time on my Grandparent’s farm located across from the Escanaba River. I grew up bobber & spin cast fishing on the Escanaba River. Lucky for me, my Grandparents encouraged me explore the northwoods & rivers which ignited my outdoor passion and experience nature at a young age.
I love Fly fishing, it brings my outdoor life experiences together, fishing, water, navigating, hiking and always experiencing something new. Besides my ‘obsession’ of fly fishing, I enjoy sharing my passion and experience with others through mentorship, coaching & volunteering.
Today there is such a wealth of fly fishing support, I’ve started organizing a Facebook Group called ‘Fly Fishing Women of Midwest Anglers Net’ (FF|WOMAN) in order to reach more women & network together. I’ve reached out to Midwest club leaders in Minnesota, Wisconsin & Iowa, Midwest fly fishing educators, Athena and Artemis Women’s Fly Shop and Midwest TU Chapters. Our first FF|WOMAN gathering will be a Friday night social and we have an hour presentation on Saturday which are both at ‘The Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo’ in March. The Expo is held in St Paul, Minnesota, a fund raiser for Trout Unlimited of Minnesota, which includes many fishy people in the business; lodges, guides, product manufacturers, naturalists & clubs. The FF|WOMAN Friday Social will be a fun way to network with all the fishy ladies attending this expo. Our Saturday presentation is a compact informative one-hour presentation. Our goal is to communicate Midwest resources available to help women get on the water & fly fish. Presenters will include Donna Smith an Orvis Store Manager, Geri Meyer of Athena and Artemis Women Fly Shop, Willa Campbell & Kate Lodge of Iowa Women Fly Fishers, myself & Hillary Pennella of Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota and Tina Murray of Wisconsin Women’s Fly Fishing Clinics.
Currently I’m the Vice-Chair for Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota, this is my second year on our board. In this capacity I’ve helped improve our communications via social media, increase our membership numbers, assisted in organizing club events/socials and made many positive community connections. I have helped mentor & teach fly fishing at clinics in Minnesota & Wisconsin
I continue to seek advancing Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota’s vision of connecting more women to our sport of fly fishing through ever increasing outreach & dedication. My daytime gig is as an engineer, daily I am required to use organizational skills which require a high level of detail and effective communication and problem-solving skills. These skills help me to connect our club members and increase engagement along with promoting our club. Then other women interested in the sport of fly fishing have a community with connections and a place to practice their sport.
When I’m not working you can find me frequently fly fishing the Driftless Area in Minnesota & Wisconsin. I also enjoy returning to my home waters in Upper Michigan and fly fishing with my family in Alaska. And last but not least I’ve recently attended chainsaw safety training by Stihl thru Trout Unlimited of Minnesota (in addition to being Grandpa chainsaw trained!). You’ll find me helping to clear buckthorn & working on TU local river restoration projects too.
Huge THANK YOU to Corie for dedicating her time, sharing her knowledge and being a genuine human!! You’re greatly appreciated!!!
