Virginia Fish and "Hang" Weekend

Welcome to the Virginia Fish and Hang weekend of education, empowerment, and fun hosted by United Women on the FlyAngelica Talan, and Kiki Galvin of Ms. Guided Fly Fishing.  This event is the UWOTF fish and “hang” format, where participants venture out to fish on their own each day and then hang out in the evenings.   The weekend has been designed to be budget-friendly, with a scholarship opportunity sponsored by TroutRoutes, and Fly Fish Instruct.  Camp, reserve a cabin/hotel, DIY Fishing, or hire a guide. The event takes place near Syria, Virginia from 5/19 – 5/21/23.   

There will be an OPTIONAL 4hr “Independent Angler” Workshop on Saturday 5/20/23.  This workshop will leave feeling more confident and competent for the DIY Fishing weekend.  We also have a unique opportunity with 8 private water rods available at Rose River Farm for Friday 5/19/23, Saturday 5/20/23, and Sunday 5/21/23.  Lodging, Private Water Access, and the Independent Angler workshop can be reserved HERE.  Kiki Galvin is also available to hire as a guide on Sunday 5/21/23.  Email Kiki at if interested in hiring her on Sunday 5/21/23.

Scholarship Available

United Women on the Fly (UWOTF), TroutRoutes, and Fly Fish Instruct are excited to offer a Women’s “Independent Angler” Weekend to the recipient with an optional $200 travel stipend. This scholarship opportunity provides diverse women with education and financial assistance to explore their interest in fly fishing during an all-inclusive weekend trip in the beautiful state of Virginia. Candidates chosen for this scholarship will learn to fly fish on private water in Virginia. Participants are encouraged to share this opportunity with others.  

Eligibility Requirements

This scholarship is created for women-identifying, fly fishing students, 18 years or older, who are either:

  1. A member of a diverse group (broadly defined to include race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical disability, or economic/educational disadvantage) that is historically underrepresented in the outdoors and fly fishing sport; or 
  2. Someone that demonstrates a long-standing commitment to diversity that the award of the scholarship will further.

This weekend has been designed to be budget-friendly.  This weekend is DIY and not guided by the co-hosts.  Everyone goes out each day to fish and then “hangs” in the evening.  See the recommended guides and outfitters if you’d like to hire a guide.

Independent Angler Workshop

We are offering a 4hr “Independent Angler” Workshop on Saturday 5/20/23.  This workshop is OPTIONAL and you will leave feeling more confident and competent for the DIY Fishing weekend.

The “Independent Angler” workshop will give you the knowledge to continue your fly fishing journey.  This course is geared towards the beginner to the intermediate angler. You will have access to the online “Fly Fishing 101” and “Reading Trout Water” course to review before the women’s weekend. 

Experience is not required. Equipment can be borrowed if needed.  All curriculum has been provided by Fly Fish Instruct. Register HERE.


Rose River Farm is located in Syria VA, less than an hour from Shenandoah National Park.   Located 7 miles from Route 29 and the Town of Madison. 17 miles from Culpeper and 25 miles from Charlottesville. Only 1:45 from Washington DC.

The nearest airport to Syria is Charlottesville (CHO) Airport which is 25.1 miles away. Other nearby airports include Washington Dulles (IAD) (57.6 miles), Reagan Washington (DCA) (74.1 miles), Richmond (RIC) (87.2 miles) and Baltimore (BWI) (101.8 miles).


You’re on your own for your food.  Please bring an appetizer to share and your beverage of choice (BYOB) to Rose River Farm on Friday Evening.  The Saturday 5/20/23 evening gathering location will be announced in the Facebook Group.  There will also be an opportunity to share the cost of meals with those who stay at Rose River Farm.

There are several camping, cabin and RV options around Syria VA and Shenadoh National Park.  We have listed a few locations to help you find a location.

Lodging Options

We have reserved all three luxury cabins at Rose River Farm, and seven spots are available to reserve HERE.  There are several lodging options in the area. Airbnb, VRBO, Hotels/Motels, Cabin Rentals, etc.  Please post in the Facebook Group if you are looking for a roommate or want to share lodging expenses.


In the western hills of rural Virginia lies the Shenandoah Valley and the serene Shenandoah National Park.  The Rapidan, the Upper Rose, the Robinson and many other streams and rivers are within a few minutes of the Rose River Farm cabins that UWOTF has reserved. Fishing License

Anglers 16 years of age and older are required to possess a valid Virginia State fishing license.  Purchase a Virginia fishing license at

Shenandoah National Park does not require a state trout license or a separate park-issued permit.

Fishing Regulations

Please familiarize yourself with all of the fishing regulations in Shenandoah National Park and the local area. 

Private Water Rod Fee Available

We have 8 rods available for Private Water access at Rose River Farm over the weekend.  These spots are only held until 4/1/23 and will be available to the public after this date. The private water is wadeable and perfect for beginners, children as well as experienced anglers.  NOTE: This water is easy to access for any with physical disabilities.

There are four types of trout at Rose River Farm: Wild Rose Rainbows, Wild Brook Trout, Wild Brown Trout, and Stocked Jumbo Rainbows.  All of these fish are beautiful and provide excellent dry fly and nymph fishing.  4 or 5 weight rods are recommended.

Available Private Water Rods.  The cost is $100 per rod.  This is DIY and is not guided. Registration is required at Eventbrite HERE.

Education Opportunities

Take the “Independent Angler” course on Friday morning before the weekend kicks off.  There will be education opportunities each evening with the co-hosts learning the basics of knots, leader set-ups, flies, etc.  Don’t be shy to ask questions!
