Featured Friday - We’re honored to have Sara Anderson (she/her) @sara.jayne.sd on the @unitedwomenonthefly Team!

Sara has volunteered as the Social Media Scheduler. Sara from Pierre, South Dakota, helps find, create and schedule the weekly #uwotfeducation, #uwotfminimonday, #uwotfmishapmonday and #fishhandlingfriday posts. This is a huge role and we are beyond happy to have Sara on the UWOTF Team!

Sara is an adventurer who loves to travel, camp, cook, eat and loves to fish! She has been fishing her entire life but only recently learned how to fly fish. She lives on the amazing Missouri River and is so fortunate to have access to world class Bass and Walleye fishing in her backyard.

#7 - Finish Strong
FINISH STRONG by being smooth, calm, reactive, and efficient from hook set to hero shoot. They strip with the rod tip wet; and strip set when the fish eats. They fight the fish using a low rod angle and bend it to the butt. Playing a fish is like a dance – the fish leads the first half. They plan and stick the landing with a net and camera ready. They handle all species with care (#StopTheLipGrip; #StopTheGillGrip), get their hero shot quickly and release the fish revived.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Now that you have been exposed to these behaviors of highly successful saltwater anglers, what are you going to do with this information? Here’s what I recommend:

* Use these 7 skills to analyze your skill set. What do you need to learn and where do you put the work in to add or improve skills?

* Put the work in. Practice. Fail. Practice. Improve. Practice in realistic conditions (wind; elevated). Experience progression and improvement, and the building of your confidence.

* Fish with experts, or anglers that are more experienced than you … and PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY DO. Ask them to think out loud (ask guides to do this too). Get into their heads and watch their reactions and movements. They are not super-heros, they just have skills and reactions that were developed through practice and experience … which is something you can have too!

Featured Friday - this week we are featuring a very special young women who has given so much to the fly fishing community and needs our help!

We’ve known Lil D for many years now and watching her fishing adventures and giving back to the world by starting @fly_girl_global has been incredible.

Deighan, along with her dad @marchbrowneyedad,have dedicated countless hours to organizing fly fishing and fly tying events for many young girls worldwide as part of Fly Girls Global and participating in waterway cleanups to help raise awareness about maintaining our rivers and natural resources. They do so much for their local community and the fly fishing community.

Sadly, on April 24th, they lost their home to a fire. Nearly everything was lost in the fire. Thank God that Jud, D, and Ranger were not at home at the time. No surprise, they were volunteering at a local river clean-up when the fire started.

With all Jud and D have done for so many of us, it's time that we help them out in their time of need. Anything you can donate will be a huge help to them. They need all new clothes, furniture, appliances, everything. All funds raised will go directly to Jud to begin rebuilding their home.
