How to determine the size of a hook
Fly Tying Week #3
The size of the hook is based on the distance of the gap/gape between the shank of the hook and the hook point. The greater the distance, the larger the size of the hook.

Hooks have different lengths, curves, weights, etc. The length has nothing to do with its size. Size is determined entirely by the width of the gap/gape.
A hook’s measurement is defined by Sizes and Aughts. “Sizes” are smaller while “Aughts” are larger. As size # gets larger, hooks get smaller. As aught get larger, hooks get bigger.
