WHAT to Expect in October

October is the best time to land the largest rainbow trout of your life! As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, the sockeye runs have ended, and the legendary Naknek River rainbows have grown huge, giving anglers a prime opportunity to catch these giants as they feed heavily before winter sets in.

Fishing Bristol Bay in October is an adventure for the hardy angler, with wind, rain, and cold often part of the experience. Yet, the stunning fall colors and golden light across the rivers and tundra make it a breathtaking time to fish.

If you’re an avid spey angler or eager to learn, October is the perfect time to join us and experience the thrill of landing rainbow trout of all sizes using leech and flesh patterns. With positive reinforcement and expert guidance, you’ll hone your spey casting skills in the heart of Alaska’s prime fishing season.

Target Species

Trophy Rainbow Trout, Trophy Artic Char, Grayling, Dolly Varden and Northern Pike.

Fishing Opportunities

We fish a handful of locations in October, as most of the small stream fishing has slowed down by now. Waters like the Kulik River, Kvichak River, Naknek River, Brooks River and Ugashik are on our weekly schedule, though there are others that fish in October as well.

On the Naknek and Kvichak, we spend our time swinging flies with single hand and spey rods for trophy rainbow trout. In each of these destinations, anglers have a legitimate shot at a fish of a lifetime. The other streams will still have spawning sockeye, and therefore hungry fish downstream of them feasting on eggs. As the egg numbers begin to thin out, we switch from egg patterns to flesh flies and other streamers. And just like September, October is when we see the huge lake-run arctic char. Artic Char in October are typically wearing their spawning colors, bright oranges like you’ve never seen.

Women's Alaska Adventure Cost

Our 4D4N trips typically cost $10,500/person based on double occupancy.  For UWOTF guests, we are offering a special package price of $8000/person.

Education Opportunity

United Women on the Fly is prioritizing education on all of our hosted trips.  The focus for this trip will be on spey fishing, where most anglers will be using two-handed rods. Participants will gain access to the Fly Fish Instruct two-part virtual Spey Fishing course and receive on-site guidance from the Lodge at 58 North guides, along with trip co-host Heather Hodson.

Each evening, we’ll have group discussions to reflect on the day’s experiences and learn from one another. Educational opportunities will include sessions on spey casting, single-hand casting, improving fishing skills, and implementing science-based practices from Keep Fish Wet.

Enhanced Trip Protection

The  Lodge at 58 North offers an alternative to traditional trip insurance policies with its own Enhanced Refund Program.

Guests are eligible to purchase this within 20 days of their trip deposits.  The pricing is typically 5-7% of your trip cost, and it protects the value of your trip.  You can cancel for any reason before your trip and receive a 75% reimbursement of your trip cost.  Frigate will also provide a 25% credit to be used on future trips.  This unique program helps ensure our guests have their trip protected during these uncertain times to travel.  We encourage you to get your own travel insurance for airline flights.

Cancellation and Refund Policy – Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON_TRANSFERABLE to another year.  Deposits will be refunded if we are able to rebook your trip, less a $500 cancellation fee for cancellations that happen 90 days before your trip start date.  There are no refunds for trips canceled within 90 days from your scheduled trip start date.  There are no refunds for missed days due to weather, flight delays, or other events out of our control.
